In Vitro Fertilization – Is It The Best Choice for Having a Baby?

By Isaq Naser

In Vitro Fertilization is commonly referred to as IVF. In vitro fertilization is the process of fertilization by manually combining an egg and sperm in a laboratory dish. When the in vitro fertilization procedure is successful, the process is combined with a procedure known as embryo transfer, which is used to physically place the embryo in the uterus.

The chances of successful pregnancy with in vitro fertilization is directly related to the age of the woman who provides the egg. Most in vitro fertilization programs divide up their success rates according to age. For example, clinics will report pregnancy rates for women under and over the age of 35 years.

In Vitro Fertilization

In Vitro Fertilization

In vitro fertilization is a procedure where the joining of egg and sperm takes place outside of the woman’s body. A woman may be given fertility drugs before this procedure so that several eggs mature in the ovaries at the same time. Eggs (ova) are removed from a woman’s ovaries using a long, thin needle. In the procedure to remove eggs, enough may be gathered to be frozen and saved (either fertilized or unfertilized) for additional in vitro fertilization attempts.

One round of the procedure costs from $10,000 up to $20,000 or more. Many factors determine costs such as the technology the clinic uses, whether egg and/or sperm donors are used and any health problems the prospective parents may have.

It can be concluded that in vitro fertilization is not proposed to treat all infertility problems. It may be more expected that your doctor will firstly prescribe other forms of fertility treatment (such hormone therapy) prior to recommending this procedure. There are several test and treatment options available that have proven successful in the right conditions. Education is the first step in coping with infertility. By becoming aware of the bothering conditions and the possible treatments, patients can better prepare themselves for a successful pregnancy strategy.
